Description:

Gracing the YMCA's Hope Street entrance is a 10'h x 6'w bronze sculpture of a trio of female athletes called "Olympiad '84" by Milton Hebald. The sculpture stands on a sleek black granite base located in a small landscaped area. All three athletes appear to be dressed in leotards and wearing ponytails, and have discreet outlines of shorts and tops incised on their figures. Inspired by the Olympic games held in Los Angeles two years before the sculpture was dedicated, Morgan Adams (Hebald's patron) felt that the sculpture's depiction of women officially recognized the YMCA's female members.

Artist Profile

Milton Hebald briefly studied at the Art Students League in 1927 and the National Academy of Design in 1931 before transferring to the Beaux Arts Institute of Design in 1932 where he worked in the style of direct carving. In 1953, Hebald attended the American Academy in Rome where he was awarded the Prix de Rome. In the past decade, the artist has turned his attention to working in the terra cotta and wood mediums because of the significant increase in the cost of bronze. Hebald’s works are in the permanent collections of the University of California, Los Angeles; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of Art; and the Tel Aviv Museum, Israel. For the past fifty years Hebald has lived and worked in Bracciano, Italy.
