Juliana Martinez
Gentle Breeze

Project Area:  Chinatown
Project:  Yale Terrace Apartments
Project Location:  716 Yale Street
Project Type:  Developer & CRA/LA Initiated

Juliana Martinez was selected as the artist for this project as her designs enhanced and added a festive atmosphere to the Yale Terrace Apartments, an affordable housing project that provides 65 housing units and 10,000 square feet of social service facilities catering to families.

Martinez was commissioned to create an interior courtyard mural for the development, which would complement the tile exterior artwork commissioned by the owner for the façade including the stairway, mosaic stone flooring and columns facing Yale Street.  The interior courtyard mural is comprised of three panels measuring 8'W x 9'H and consists of ceramic tiles that were fabricated for outdoor display.

Juliana Martinez is known for her highly personalized craftsmanship with hand cut ceramic tile.  For Gentle Breeze, the artist’s designs were reproduced into glazed tiles of various shapes and colors depicting floral imagery.  All of the tile was cut, glazed and fired in the artist’s small studio.
