Description:

Steve Appleton's Face Finder /  Face Time  is an interactive artwork that allows the public to have their facial image captured by a camera situated within an aluminum sculpture on the plaza.  These images are also displayed in live time on the sculpture's four-foot diameter glass screen via a rearview projection system embedded within the sculpture. A projector mounted onto an overhead pedestrian bridge also sends select facial images (either captured in real time, or from the FaceFinder archive) onto a 70-foot wall at the rear of the plaza. The projector, mounted onto a moveable robotic support, projects the image at various spots on the wall, much like a klieg light rakes the night sky, moving within a set of parameters. Appleton developed the unique robotic components and facial recognition software and interface modalities between the camera and the projector to insure functionality and durability in the artwork.

Face Finder/Face Time was included in the Public Art in Review section of Art in America's 2007 Annual Guide (August 2007).

Artist Profile

Steve Appleton is currently an assistant professor of Art in the Sculpture/New Genre Program of Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.  In addition to Appleton’s Face Finder / Face Time, a large-scale interactive digital projection project at the plaza of Sunset and Vine, the artist has also completed a major site-specific architecturally integrated artwork for the Metro Green Line Harbor Station.  Appleton received his MFA in sculpture from the University of Southern California.  The artist has received numerous awards including the following:  Americans for the Art’s Public Art Year in review (2007); National Instruments Vision Program (2000); City of Los Angeles, Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Grant (1992); Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions project grant (1990) with Deborah Oliver; and a PanAm Fulbright (1989) for installation and a teaching project in Rio de Janeiro.
